At the ceremony on February 2, the TDE rapper became just the third female artist to win Best Rap Album following Lauryn Hill in 1997 (as part of the Fugees) and Cardi B in 2019. She also delivered one of the standout performances of the night, running through a medley of “Catfish” and “Denial Is A River” that further showcased her electric stage presence and theatrical, finely-tuned choreography.
Now in the first full sales week following the show, the album, ALLIGATOR BITES NEVER HEAL, has shot up to the No. 14 spot on the Billboard 200 with sales of 31k – becoming her first-ever top 20 album.
The effort more than doubled in weekly sales.
Hours after her Grammy win, Doechii celebrated her historic night by dropping a new song that nods to a classic Kanye West moment at the awards show.
“Nosebleeds” finds the Florida native putting her spin on Ye’s famous Grammys acceptance speech from 2005 when he won the same award for The College Dropout.
“I don’t know, is she gonna go crazy? Is she gonna go crazy? / Errbody wanted to know what Doechii would do if she didn’t win / I guess we’ll never–,” she raps on the thumping, shape-shifting track.
The lyrics call back to West’s aforementioned speech where he said: “Everybody asked me the question, they wanted to know, I know he’s gonna wild out, he’s gonna do something crazy! Everybody wanted to know what I would do if I didn’t win… I guess we’ll never know.”
The song follows the release of the cinematic delight that is her music video for “Denial Is A River” – following a bit of a cryptic rollout that had fans wondering what it would be.
In the final product, Doechii and her guests have a chaotic house party of sorts as she raps about her rise to fame the last few years – then closes things out with a bang quite literally as the soundstage-built set explodes.
