June 19, 2022

On his 35th birthday, Kendrick Lamar released A Day in Accra, Ghana, which captures his first trip to Ghana.

Kendrick Lamar is celebrating his 35th birthday with a trip to the motherland. On Friday (June 17), the rapper (alongside Spotify) released the mini-documentary A Day in Accra, Ghana, which was filmed shortly after the release of his latest album Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers.

In the visual, Lamar visits kids at Virgil Abloh’s Ghana Freedom skatepark and interacts with locals, while the film captures the city’s bustling activity and aerial views of the coastline. Lamar also chats with Carl Chery, Spotify’s Head of Urban Music and Creative Director, about staying present during the trip. The rapper also opens up about the stigma of therapy, which is tackled on his new album.

On the subject of therapy, Lamar says that while growing up, “we learned to hold all our sh*t in,” and how he “challenges myself to go to therapy…it’s like a whole new step in a whole new generation… it’s growth.”

“Everybody got their own different experience,” he continues. “Everything that we do out here, everything that we say, that’s been done… It’s all a representation of all of us.”
